Martha Groepper

Martha Groepper, 97, of Remsen, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2005, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center at Remsen.

Martha Groepper was born Sept. 24, 1908, at rural Remsen, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Reisburg) Roling. Martha was raised in the Remsen area and received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. On Jan. 8, 1935, she married Ernest Groepper at Remsen. They farmed near Remsen for 37 years, retiring and moving into Remsen in 1972. Ernest died Feb. 17, 1998. Martha had been a resident of Happy Siesta since May 4, 2004.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, church Guild and Catholic Daughters of America. She loved to cook, quilt and garden. She was a beautiful mother, grand-, great-grand and great-great-grandmother and neighbor. She opened her heart to all.

Survivors include one son, Randy and his wife, Linda of Iowa City; five daughters, Marlene and her husband, Bernard Jungers and Karen and her husband, Leo Freking all of Hospers, Jean Bird of South Sioux City, Neb., Pat and her husband, John Walker of Orono, Minn., Renee Krug of Remsen; 31 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lawrence Roling of Remsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two grandsons, Mark Jungers and Matthew Groepper; two sons-in-law, Ed Bird and Lloyd Krug; three brothers, Elmer in infancy, Frank and Gilbert Roling; six sisters, Marie Roling when a child, Theresa Nacke, Regina Pick, Henrietta Tentinger, Eleanor Siefke and Rosella Rodesch.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Remsen. Friends may call any time after 2 p.m. today (Thursday), at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. by the Catholic Daughters of America and St. Mary's Guild and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be Marlene Jungers, Jean Bird, Pat Walker, Karen Freking, Renee Krug and Randy Groepper.
