Margaret (Lucas) Riedel, 89, of Memphis, Tenn. and formerly of Remsen, died peacefully at her residence in Memphis on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2005.
Margaret was born Jan. 10, 1916, in Remsen, the daughter of John and Kathryn (Delperdang) Lucas. Margaret was raised in Remsen where she received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School from which she graduated in 1933. She then attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, and Western Union College in Le Mars, from which she graduated cum laude. She then taught English and physical education at a Le Mars high school, as well as giving private violin and tap dancing lessons.
Around 1940 she moved to Chicago, Ill., where she met Daniel J. Riedel and they were married on Aug. 29, 1942 at Philadelphia, Pa. In the mid 1940s they moved to Berkley, Calif., where Margaret attended the University of California receiving two masters degrees, one in education and one in library science. She taught in the Oakland Inner City School System in Oakland, Calif., and was an elementary school librarian until her retirement. Daniel died Sept. 13, 1968.
In the early 1980s, Margaret retired and moved to Memphis, Tenn. During her retirement she volunteered to do all the archiving for St. Agnes Academy as well as sewing replicas of all the school uniforms from the past to the present. She was accomplished in music, having played first violin in an orchestra and the piano at the concert level and in art, having painted many works of art in several different mediums. Her family is most proud of her and all her accomplishments.
Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, James Bateman of Fairfax, Va.; two grandsons, Brandon and his wife, Megan Bateman of Aurora, Ill., John Bateman of Wilmington, N.C.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call any time after 5 p.m. Monday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.
Casketbearers will be James and Brandon Bateman, Anthony Delperdang, Darwin Draayer, Keith and Jason Harvey.
