Leonard J. Kommes, 56, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Sept. 25, 2005, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Leonard Joseph Kommes was born Jan. 27, 1949, in Le Mars, the son of Albert and Mabel (Luken) Kommes. He was raised in the Le Mars area and graduated from Gehlen Catholic High School. Following his education, Leonard was employed with Merrill Plumbing.
On May 5, 1973, Leonard and Betty Johnson were united in marriage at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. He worked with Le Febure security prior to his employment with the Plymouth County Secondary Roads Department. Leonard worked on the bridge crew and drove a snowplow. He recently retired due to his failing health.
Leonard was an active member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. He served as an usher, Eucharistic minister and assisted with the CCD program. Leonard was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.
He enjoyed boating, hunting, golfing and helped many of his friends with farming. Leonard also volunteered his time with Le Mars Little League and coached his children's teams. He was also a father figure for many of his children's friends.
Survivors include his wife Betty of Le Mars; a son, Brent and his wife Larissa of Sioux City; two daughters, Angela Kommes and her fiancÚ Patrick Jones of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Heidi Kommes of Savannah, Ga.; two brothers, Ken and his wife, Erlene of Fort Dodge, and Rich and his wife, Marlys of Le Mars; four sisters, Dolores Sitzman and her husband, Gerald of Hinton, Mary Ann Langley and her husband Bill of Burnsville, Minn., Loretta Steichen and her husband, Lee of Alton, and Lavonne Galles and her husband Randy "Pete" of Remsen; a sister-in-law, LaVonne Kommes of Le Mars; a brother-in-law, Daniel "Butch" Thiel of Le Mars; a sister-in-law, Patricia Laubenthal and her husband Dave of Spencer; two brothers-in-law, Wayne Johnson and his wife Teresa of Greeley, Colo., and John Johnson and his wife, Marirose of Marcus; and many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Florence Thiel; and two brothers, Larry and Don; his mother- and father-in-law Myra and Roy Johnson; and a brother-in-law Vernon Johnson.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Kevin Richter will officiate. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Mauer -- Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 4 to 8 p.m. with a rosary service at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Fett and the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lindy Laubenthal, Katie Johnson, Cindy Daggett, Curt Langley and Dale Steichen. Pallbearers will be Scott Kommes, Jason Marienau, Tom Marcotte, Cody Mittelstaedt, Craig Christman, and Russ Hobson.
