The Remsen-Union softball team suffered a setback in the opening round of the Rocket Tournament Saturday in Remsen, then bounced back to pick up a 12-2 win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn in the consolation round to finish the day 1-1.
It took until the third inning for the Lady Rockets to get the bats going against H-M-S, but once they did the rout was on as R-U scored six runs in that third, adding one in the fourth and five in the fifth to end the game in five innings. H-M-S scored its only two runs in the fifth inning, but it was too little too late as R-U improved to 10-16 on the year.
Erica Loutsch picked up the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one.
R-U had seven hits in the game as Sara Bortscheller recorded two with a single and a double and Cassie Stoos logged a pair with a single and a triple. Hope Weiler was also 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Katie Heisterkamp was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Mandy Staab was 1-for-3.
"We played a great game. We played some outstanding defense and we the the ball very well," said R-U coach Heather Youde.
Staab provided all of R-U's offense in an opening-round 12-2 loss to River Valley to start tournament play Saturday. The Wolverines scored a run in the first to take the lead, adding four in the third and seven in the fourth. The Lady Rockets managed just two runs on six hits, with a Staab two-run home run in the fourth plating both runs.
The home run was Staab's only hit of the game as she finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Bortscheller added a double and Marisa Wurth, Stoos and Susan Law each added singles.
Loutsch took the loss on the mound after giving up six earned runs on 12 hits and three walks, striking out three.
"We didn't come out ready to play (against River Valley)," said Youde. "We just were very flat and seemed to be a step behind the whole game."
R-U will close out regular season play by hosting Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in a non-conference game Wednesday.
