Game one was the continuation of an earlier conference game at Akron that was called due to rain with St. Mary's leading 9-0 in the top of the first inning. The Hawks started right where they left off June 10, ripping 20 hits and starting Friday night's doubleheader with a 28-1 victory.
Austin Steichen led RSM with a 4-for-4 game at the plate, while Jon Klein added three hits and Andy Steichen, Scott Manning and Ryan Hajek each had a pair of hits.
Jason Wesselmann got the win in his first pitching start of the year, allowing one run on four hits while striking out three batters in five innings.
Ryan Oetken pushed across A-W's only run in the game with a solo homer. Oetken and Josh Mahaney each worked out of the bullpen for the Westerners in relief of Roman Eastman, who allowed 16 runs (10 earned) on nine hits and eight walks in 2 1/3 innings.
St. Mary's continued to execute offensively in the second game, improving to 13-2 in War Eagle Conference play with a 16-5 five-inning victory.
Austin Steichen had three more hits and four RBI at the plate and improved to 3-1 on the mound, allowing one earned run on five hits in five innings of work. Manning and Dustin Poeckes added a pair of hits and each drove in a run.
Justin Koch got the loss for A-W, giving up nine runs in two innings before giving way to Doug Loutsch and Oetken out of the bullpen. Oetken also turned in two of A-W's six hits in the nightcap and drove in a pair of runs.
The Westerners, now 5-16 overall and 4-11 in conference play, return to action tonight when they host South O'Brien. The 19-6 Hawks will travel to Le Mars for a matchup with WEC-leading Gehlen Catholic at the Riverview Complex.
