Leonard Joseph Konz, 88, of Alton, died Thursday, June 30, 2005, at his home in Alton after a brief illness.

Leonard Joseph Konz was born Oct. 2, 1916, at Granville, the son of Matthew and Anna (Mousel) Konz. Leonard was raised in the Alton area and received his education at St. Mary's Academy in Alton. On Sept. 23, 1941, he married Esther Arens at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. They farmed in the Alton area until 1965 when they moved into Alton. He then operated the Champlin Service Station in Alton until about 1968, shortly after which he managed the Co-Op Gas and Oil in Alton until he retired in 1987.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church at Alton and the Knights of Columbus of Remsen. He enjoyed fishing, mowing lawn, playing cards, playing bingo, bowling and the "Sizzlin Sevens". He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, Esther, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Esther of Alton; two sons and their wives, Gary and Karen of Le Mars, and Tony and Kelly of Alton; one daughter and her husband, Deb and Dennis Schmit of Alton; 10 grandchildren, Jason and his wife Gina Konz, Jodi and her husband Dave Moir, Laura and her husband Josh Sievers, Jeff Konz, Chris Gianopoulos, Marisa Konz, Megan, Shane, Austin and Melissa Schmit; four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Alyssa and Madeline Konz and Drew Moir; three sisters, Verena Pottebaum and Marian Kinney both of Alton, Rose Wolf of Sioux City; nine sisters-in-laws, Honey Konz of Hospers, Phyllis Englert of Hills, Helen Jaminet, Doris Arens, Mary C. Loutsch, Elvira Arens, Doris Wurth and Jane and her husband, Leander Konz, all of Remsen, and Mary Ann Arens of Le Mars; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Marilyn Konz; three brothers, Magnus, LeRoy and Lester; one sister, Loretta Klein; four brothers-in-law, Edmund Pottebaum, Robert Kinney, Norbert Wolf and Martin Klein; and one sister-in-law, Valeria Alesch.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. John Vakulskas Jr. and the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Alton. Friends may call any time after 2 p.m. today (Friday), at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Rosary Society and a vigil prayer service at 8 p.m., all at the church. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers will be Jason Konz, Jeff Konz, Chris Gianopoulos, Shane Schmit, Austin Schmit, Josh Sievers and Dave Moir.
