Robert L. "Bitz" Bitterly, 69, of The Villages, Fla., and formerly of Le Mars, died Monday, May 2, 2005, in Summerfield, Fla., following a lengthy illness.

Robert L. Bitterly was born Jan. 7, 1936, in Waterloo, the son of Fern and Elmer Bitterly. He attended school in Waterloo, and graduated from West Waterloo High School. He served his country in the United States Army and later in the Reserves. He married Charm Lorraine Riddle on Dec. 23, 1961, at Anthon, Iowa.

In 1963 the couple moved to Le Mars. Bob was employed with Westmar College as their director of alumni relations for three years. He began his career at Le Mars Community Schools in 1966, where he taught high school government for three years. Bob then served as high school assistant principal from 1969 to 1994. Following his work at Le Mars Community Schools, Bob moved to Indianapolis, Ind., and served as Central Region director of Little League Baseball. He retired in 2001 and moved to The Villages, Florida.

During his years in Le Mars, Bob was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. He served as a Little League volunteer for 27 years and coached a team in 1972 that nearly reached the Little League World Series. He enjoyed baseball and coaching as well as golfing. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks.

Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Linda Bitterly of The Villages, Fla.; a son, Thomas Bitterly and his wife Kathy of Minneapolis, Minn.; a daughter, Kari Sue Bitterly of Tampa, Fla.; a granddaughter, Taryn Charm Bitterly of Minneapolis, Minn.; and a sister, Doris Smith of Sacramento, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Charm L. Bitterly on April 7, 1979.

Memorial services are set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. The Rev. Thomas Balm will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars with a luncheon to take place at the Le Mars Community Middle School Commons.

Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church and will continue until service time. Local funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Mauer -- Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

A Little League Championship Plaza in memory of Bob Bitterly is planned at the site of the regional finals. Memorial contributions may be mailed to Little League Central Region Headquarters Building Fund, 9802 E. Little League Drive, Indianapolis, Ind. 46235.
