JACKSON, Minn. -- Lowell M. Benson, 77, of Jackson, Minn., died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at the Jackson Good Samaritan Center in Jackson.
Lowell Michael Benson was born May 1, 1927, in Le Mars, the son of Willard and Martha (Reard) Benson. He graduated from St. Joseph Catholic High School in Le Mars on May 21, 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He attended Loras College in Dubuque, where he graduated on June 5, 1949. He then attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Ill., graduating in 1954.
He was united in marriage to Beth Wierks on May 3, 1950, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sioux City.
He interned for a year in Sheldon before moving to Jackson in 1955. He owned Doctor Benson Optometry in Jackson, retiring in 1990.
Survivors include his wife, Beth, of Jackson, Minn.; two daughters, Teresa Hill of Marcola, Ore., and Laura and Jim Svoboda of Jackson, Minn.; four sons, Thomas and Nancy Benson and Drs. John and Diana Benson, both of Mankato, Minn., James Benson of St. Paul, Minn., and Paul and Kristi Benson of Bloomington, MInn.; and 15 grandchildren, Amanda Draine, Daniel (Nicole) Draine, Nathanial Draine, Ehren Hill, Afton Hill, Sara Benson, Stephanie Benson, Julie Benson, Jessica Benson, Megan Benson, Katelyn Benson, Adam Benson, Emily Benson, Erin Benson and Anna Benson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson, with the Rev. Peter Schuster officiating. Burial, with military graveside honors, will be in Good Shepherd Cemetery in Jackson. Visitation will be today (Monday) from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sathe-Osterberg Funeral Home in Jackson, with a rosary at 7:45 p.m. and continues one hour prior to the service at the church Tuesday.
