No charges filed in downed truck accident

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Police Chief Stu Dekkenga said while details about the truck accident pictured above are not yet known, it appears that when the driver applied the brakes, the wheels stopped and the truck and trailer kept going. It ripped the wheels right out from underneath, Dekkenga said. The accident occurred about 8 a.m. this morning, March 30, at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 75 and Iowa Hwy. 3. The truck carried rolls of paper.

A semi-trailer loaded with paper rolls landed on the roadway March 20 when the dual-rear axles on the trailer became disconnected.

Harvey G. Spaans, 45, of Hull was driving the 1999 Peterbilt semi tractor trailer southbound in the outside lane of Highway 75 North in Le Mars when the accident occurred. He was in the process of coming to a stop for the traffic signal at the intersection with Iowa Highway 3.

As he applied the brakes, the axles slid from under the trailer which caused the loaded trailer to land on the roadway, causing major damage to the trailer.

The trailer's contents of paper rolls had to be loaded onto another trailer before this vehicle could be removed from the scene.

Damage to the semi-trailer owned by Kottke Trucking of Buffalo Lake, Minn., is estimated at $20,000.

No charges are being filed. Le Mars Police were assisted by the Iowa Department of Transportation at the scene.
