Marie B. Hughes, 86, of Remsen, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Marie B. Hughes was born Sept. 18, 1918, at rural Lost Nation, the daughter of Phillip and Jane (McGonegle) McAndrew. Marie was raised on her parents farm outside of Lost Nation in Clinton County. She graduated from Lost Nation High School and then attended Mt. Mercy Jr. College and Paris Beauty Academy both in Cedar Rapids. She was employed as a switchboard operator at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, as administrative assistant at Rock Island Arsenal during World War II and as a beautician in Delmar, New London and Davenport.

On March 2, 1946, she married Richard Hughes at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Davenport. They farmed southeast of Remsen for 40 years. Richard died Oct. 23, 1989. She moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars, in September 2002 and had been a resident of the Happy Siesta since Aug. 2, 2004.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and the church Guild, and Catholic Daughters of America.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Robert and Linda of Norfolk, Neb., and Tim and Mary of Carroll; two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Greg Woolever of Ankeny, and Kathy and Mike Overman of Minneapolis, Minn.; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. John (Linda) Hughes of Le Mars; 16 grandchildren; three brothers, Paul McAndrew of Springfield, Mo., Robert and his wife, Jeannie McAndrew of Norwalk, Conn., and Dr. John and his wife, Therese McAndrew of Santa Ana, Calif.; and one sister, Rosalie Tiedje of Davenport.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Thomas and John; one grandson, Michael Hughes; three brothers, Phillip, Raymond and Clement McAndrew; two sisters, Ursula McAndrew and Mary Hart.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. Friday. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Guild and the Catholic Daughters of America and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Casketbearers will be Marie's grandsons, Jeff, Kevin, Nate and Russell Hughes, Sean Overman and John Woolever.
