Termination of the lease for the Le Mars Art Center brought comment from a state official.
Anita Walker, executive director of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, grew up in Le Mars, where her mother served as mayor.
"I am so sad to learn that the future of the Le Mars Arts Council is in question," Walker e-mailed the Daily Sentinel. "As communities across Iowa are embracing the arts as a powerful strategy for economic development, our local arts councils are more important than ever. Communities rich in the arts and culture attract and keep talented, creative people.
"Local arts councils provide leadership and resources to enrich the cultural environment, support local artists and spearhead activities that engage people of all ages. The local arts council is key to making our communities great places to live.
"The Iowa Arts Council and our staff stand ready to assist in the reorganization of the Le Mars Arts Council, so it can continue to be an important asset to your community."
