Lana Blizzard

Monday, January 10, 2005

FAIRBANKS, AK -- Lana Laurene Blizzard, a longtime resident of Fairbanks, Alaska, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, in Mountain Home, Idaho, while visiting for the holidays.

She was born Lana Laurene Grego on Feb. 8, 1926, in Woodriver, Neb., the daughter of Sam and Bessie Grego. She was the oldest of eight children, one brother and six sisters.

Lana spent most of her early years in the Midwest. Her favorite place being Le Mars, where she went to high school and recently returned for her 50th reunion.

Instead of pursuing her love for radio announcing, she pursued a young Navy seaman, Jack Blizzard. Together they had four daughters. Her next 57 years were devoted to raising her children, being actively involved in the lives of her nine grandchildren and simply enjoying her 10 great-grandchildren.

Lana and her children moved to Alaska in 1965. She owned a stenographic business which was destroyed by the flood of "1967". She continued in the secretarial and bookkeeping field until health problems forced her to retire in 1992.

Besides her work and family, she was an avid bowler, winning many awards. Her later years were spent playing bridge, "duplicate" being her most favorite. She loved being busy; cooking, sewing and gardening were some of her favorite pastimes. To her, there was always a project to be done. Her newest pastime was to go gambling in Jackpot, Nev., just outside Mountain Home where she was heading to spend her Christmas money.

She will be remembered for her quick wit, her sense of humor, her feisty approach to life and her love for her family. She will be deeply missed.

Lana leaves behind many loved ones: four daughters, Jackie Mitchell and husband, Greg; Nixie Doan and partner, Harold; Betsy Hall and partner, Darrell; Abbie Preslan and husband, Denny; grandchildren Bobbie Munson, Greg and Rawan Mitchell, Greg and Eryn Jordan, Chris and Linette Jordan, Nick Evans, Tristana Doan, Travis Doan, Jeremy and Terra Preslan, and Ashley Preslan. Step Grandchildren: Paul and Nicole Preslan; great-grandchildren Tayler and Ty Munson. Tijana Mitchell, Christian, Collin, Cayden, and Cody Jordan, and Sabrina, Kaitlin, and Hally Jordan; one brother; Leroy; six sisters: Geraldine, Beverly, Carmela, Dorothy, Ruth, Delores and spouses; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Bessie Grego.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, in the Pioneer Room at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. Cremation under the direction of Rost Funeral Home, Mountain Home, Idaho.
