John Patrick Hughes, 53, of Le Mars, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004, at his home.

John Patrick Hughes was born Jan. 9, 1951, at Le Mars, the son of Richard and Marie (McAndrew) Hughes. John was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen from which he graduated in 1969. He then attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1973.

On Aug. 10, 1973, he married Linda Koopman at Le Mars. They made their home at Templeton, where he taught at Halbur-Templeton Catholic School for one year. They then moved to Oyens, and he taught at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. In 1979, they moved to Le Mars. In 1981 he began working for Ricke's Feed Supply at Remsen which later became Fid's Feed Supply. He was a member of the 185th Fighter Wing Air National Guard in Sioux City for 20 years.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church where he served as a lector and Eucharistic minister. He was on the Little League board in Le Mars, enjoyed coaching softball and was a member of Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of Le Mars; one son, Kevin of Iowa City; two daughters, Katie of Concord, Calif., and Mollie and her fiance, Hal Rogers both of Fort Mill, S.C.; his mother, Marie Hughes of Remsen; two brothers and their wives, Bob and Linda of Norfolk, Neb., and Tim and Mary of Carroll; two sisters and their husbands, Mary and Greg Woolever of Ankeny and Kathy and Mike Overman of Minneapolis, Minn.; 16 nieces and nephews; one great-niece; two great-nephews; his mother-in-law, Darlene Koopman of Le Mars; and a brother-in-law, Bill Koopman and his wife, Kris, of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dick; one brother, Tom, and a nephew, Mike Hughes.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. James Tigges and other visiting clergy officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.

Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday), at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers will be Jeff Hughes, John Woolever, Aaron Dominowski, Jamie Pick, Chad Shrader and Brad Ortmann.
