Elmer L. Wilmes, 69, of Loma Linda, Calif., and formerly of Le Mars, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, from complications due to emphysema.
Elmer L. Wilmes was born Jan. 14, 1936, the son of John and Anna (Grothe) Wilmes. Elmer attended schools in Le Mars and joined the United States Navy in 1953. He retired from the Navy in 1975 as a Postal Clerk Chief. He worked for the San Bernardino City Unified School District as the mail director until his retirement in January 2004.
Elmer married Yoshi (June) in 1965. Elmer and June had two sons, Lawrence and Michael. His wife June died in 1976. In 1991 Elmer married Arlene. He also welcomed into his life, her two daughters, Jamie and Kelly.
Elmer was a member of the Eagles and the American Legion.
Elmer was a kind and compassionate person who touched people in many different ways and he will be deeply missed.
Survivors include his wife Arlene; sons Lawrence and Michael, sisters Juanita Fockler of Le Mars and Barbara and her husband, Darrell Cantor of Fountain Valley, Calif.; sister-in-law Betty Wilmes of Sioux City; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Richard, Jack and Don, his daughter-in-law Digna, and his granddaughter, Erica.
A Scriptural wake service will be held at the Montecito Mortuary, 24145 Barton Road, Loma Linda, Calif., on Thursday, Dec. 30. The viewing will be from 5 to 9 p.m., and with a rosary said at 6:20 p.m.
