BEARDSTOWN, Ill. -- Raymond Howard "Ray" Clarey, 70, of Beardstown, Ill., died Tuesday morning, Nov. 23, 2004, in Jacksonville, Ill.
He was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Merrill, the son of John F. and Esther McCorkell Clarey. Ray graduated from Liberty High School, rural Merrill, in 1952 and served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1958. He married Helen Mae Braun on June 20, 1959, in Sioux City.
He began his employment with Kent Feeds, Inc. in 1958 in Sioux City, as a night mixer and later became plant manager. He also served as plant manager of Kent Feeds, Inc., in Estherville, and in Beardstown, Ill. He retired in 1998 as the eastern region vice president of plant operations.
Mr. Clarey was an active member of the St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown, Ill., and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1007 in Beardstown, Ill., and had served on the board of directors of the Beardstown Park District and the Beardstown United Way. He maintained the St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery in Beardstown for 31 years.
He enjoyed music and dancing but his greatest pleasure in life was his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, of Beardstown, Ill.; two sons Patrick (wife Kimberly) Clarey of Jacksonville, Ill., and Daniel (wife Jill) Clarey of Columbus, Neb.; two daughters, Kaye (husband John) Hardwick of Beardstown, Ill., and Colleen (husband Mark) Ramsey of Meredosia, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, Trenton, Nathaniel, Chelsie and Braun Clarey of Jacksonville, Ill., Kyle, Dillon, Colton, and Jacey Clarey of Columbus, Neb., and Sam and Claire Hardwick of Beardstown, Ill.; two brothers, Al (wife Carol) Clarey of Le Mars, and Rich (wife Jean) Clarey of Petaluma, Calif.; five sisters, Patricia Graham of Sioux City, Ann (husband Leo) DeRocher of Merrill, Lucy (husband Emmett) Sitzmann of Kingsley, Lu (husband Denny) Beck of Columbus, Neb., and Donna (husband Phil) Vondrak of Sioux City; and 58 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Freddie, Dan, and Jack, and three nephews.
A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at the St. Alexius Catholic Church in Beardstown with burial in the St. Alexius Catholic Cemetery in Beardstown. Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown, Ill. was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were his sons Pat Clarey and Dan Clarey, sons-in-law John Hardwick and Mark Ramsey, and grandsons Trenton Clarey, Nathaniel Clarey, Kyle Clarey, Dillon Clarey, Sam Hardwick, Braun Clarey, and Colton Clarey.
Memorials have been suggested to the Knights of Columbus Cemetery Fund.
