MARCUS -- Glenda J. Updike, 57, of Marcus, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, following a lengthy illness.
Glenda Jean Updike was born Oct. 7, 1947, at Spirit Lake, the daughter of Glenn and Elva (Dalldorf) Igou. She attended high school in Spirit Lake. On Oct. 19, 1963, Glenda and Roger Updike were united in marriage at Lakefield, Minn. The couple eventually settled in Marcus where they raised their six children.
Glenda worked at the Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen. She would later work at K-Products in Marcus for 17 years, first in production and later as the cafeteria cook. After this, Glenda managed Mom's Café in downtown Marcus, and most recently, operated a daycare in her home.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus.
Glenda enjoyed camping and boating whenever she was able. Most important was time spent with her family, especially during holidays.
Glenda gave the gift of life through eye and tissue donation so others may prosper.
Survivors include her husband of 41 years, Roger of Marcus; six children, Dawn Updike and a special friend, John Schaper of Marcus, Roger Updike Jr. and his wife Brenda (Swalve) of Spencer, Teresa Updike of Sioux City, Michelle Nelson and her husband, Cliff of Cherokee, Sherry Miller and her husband, Rick of Marcus, Ricki Updike and his wife Sarah (Haag) of Aurelia; 16 grandbabies, Tiffany and Tera Updike, Kimberly, Rebecca and Jessica Updike, Jeffrey and Jasmin Updike, Tameria Persons; MaKayla, Christopher and Colby Nelson, Dustin, Samantha and Andrew Miller, and Alexandria Updike; a special "grandson" Dakota Kasner; brothers and sisters, Ronnie Igou and his wife, Kathy of Cherokee, Sharon Sleik and her husband, Dean of Iron Mountian, Mich., Gale Igou and his wife, Sandi of Spencer; in-laws Bernard Bond of Marcus, Mae Updike of Lakefield, Minn., Ann Adams of British Columbia, Canada, Janet Gubine of Beaver Dam, Wis., Bill Updike and his wife Linda of Lakefield, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews throughout the Midwest.
She was preceded in death by her mother (2002) and father (1976); a granddaughter Kristina (1988); a sister Joyce Bond (1998); her father-in-law Bill Updike (1985); a niece Tammy Jo Igou (1981); and two great-nephews Tylor and Trevor Nelson.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church in Marcus. The Rev. James Gruber will officiate. A private family burial service will follow. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus, with the family present from 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
Pallbearers will be Tiffany Updike, Dustin Miller, MaKayla Nelson, Kimberly Updike, Samantha Miller, Jeffrey Updike and Rebecca Updike.
