Josephine Jochum, 102, of Alton, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

The former Josephine Block was born March 8, 1902, at rural Granville, the daughter of Nicholas and Mary (Remacle) Block. At the age of two, she moved with her family to Oklahoma where they lived for two years. The family then moved to Hospers, where she received her education at St. Anthony's Catholic School. On Jan. 16, 1923, she married Hugo G. Jochum at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hospers. They farmed near Alton until 1927 when they moved to near Hospers to farm. In 1929 they returned to the Alton area to farm until retiring on the farm in 1963. Hugo died Oct. 2, 1988. Josephine remained on the farm until September 1991 when she moved into Alton with her daughter, Martha.

Survivors include three daughters, Loretta and her husband, Roy Murphy of Sheldon, Martha Jochum of Alton, and Rita and her husband, Jerome Fischer of Hospers; one son-in-law, Robert Fischer and his wife, Lorraine of Granville; 36 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose Wilhelmi of Le Mars; and one sister-in-law, Frances Jochum of Jasper, Ind.

She was preceded in death by three daughters, Agnes and her husband. Vince Beyer, Hilda and her husband. Elmer Rolfes and Evelyn Fischer; two granddaughters, Sharon Murphy and Julie Fischer; four brothers, Nick, John, Mike and Henry Block; and two sisters, Mary Wilhelmi and Jenny Jungers.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. John Vakulskas and Msgr. Nicholas J. Ruba officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Alton. Friends may call any time after 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Rosary Society and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers will be Rick Beyer, David Fischer, Ron Fischer, Jerry Murphy, Tom Murphy and Steve Rolfes.
