Fern J. Dirks, 91, of Le Mars died Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.

Fern J. Dirks was born April 4, 1913, in Eagle township, rural Sioux County, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Anna (Hemmingson) Webert. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on May 11, 1913, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ireton. She attended country school in Eagle Township. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith on May 1, 1927, at Peace Lutheran Church at rural Sioux Center.

She was united in marriage to LeRoy Dirks on March 5, 1932, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hudson, S.D. The couple lived in Sioux County until 1941, and then moved to Le Mars. In 1943, they moved to Merrill, where she helped her husband with his auto repair business. In 1953, they moved to Spencer, and later to Everly, where they continued in the auto repair business. LeRoy died in December 1984.

In 1986, Fern moved back to Le Mars where she made her home at Floyd Valley Apartments. In May 1997, she became a resident of Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars. 

She was a former member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill, First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, and later Hope Lutheran Church in Everly. She was currently a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars. While she was active, she was a member of the Ladies Aide, Circle groups, and Bible study. She also volunteered at the Le Mars Senior Center.

She enjoyed cooking, canning, and raising a garden. She also enjoyed square dancing, fishing and camping, and spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include: a daughter, Loanne Dodge of Ankeny; a son and his wife. Harlan and Joan Dirks of Saratoga, Calif.; five grandchildren: Marvin Dirks and his wife, Sue, of Crawford, Neb., Gary Dodge and his wife, Jane of Des Moines, Lisa Ann Dodge of Marina del Rey, Calif., Colton Dirks of Qingdao, China, and Amie Dirks of Charlotte, N.C.; five great-grandchildren: Jennifer, Joe, Kendra, Jessica and Megan; a great-great-granddaughter, Kristen; a sister, Neva (Webert) Dirks of Gardnerville, Nev.; four sister-in-laws, Marie De Boom and Evelyn Dirks, both of Le Mars, Dorothy Dirks and Ada Bultman and her husband Darrel, all of Hawarden; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LeRoy in 1984; a son: Ordell in 1965; a son-in-law: Gordon Dodge in 1979; a granddaughter, Pamela Sue Dirks in infancy; daughter-in-law, Georgia Dirks; a grandson, Mark Dirks; two sisters: Bernice Christopherson and Arlene Zimmerman; and two brothers, Leslie and Ordean Webert.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A. in Le Mars. Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Lone Tree Cemetery in Everly. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Friday) with family present to greet friends after 5 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Casketbearers will be Bill Zimmerman, Randy Webert, Darwin Dirks, Stanley Dirks, Myron Dirks, Dennis Dirks, and Jerel Epling. Honorary casketbearers will be Marvin Dirks, Gary Dodge, Colton Dirks, Lisa Ann Dodge, Amie Dirks, and Lynn Dirks.

Memorials can be made in Fern's name to St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. or the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center, both in Le Mars.
