Vernon G. Johnson, 62, of Le Mars, and formerly of Marcus, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Vernon G. Johnson was born March 28, 1942, the son of Roy O. and Myra L. (Specht) Johnson. He grew up in the Marcus area, graduating from Marcus High School in 1960. He graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City.
He started his career of teaching and coaching at Alta High School, and later moved to Luverne, Minn. He received his master's degree from the University of South Dakota before moving to Carlisle. He taught at Carlisle schools for more than 30 years before retiring in 2000. After retirement, he moved to Le Mars where he helped care for his mother, Myra.
He loved teaching and sports.
Survivors include his mother, Myra Johnson of Le Mars; two sisters, Betty Kommes and her husband, Leonard of Le Mars and Patty Laubenthal and her husband, Dave, of Spencer; two brothers, Wayne Johnson and his wife, Teresa of Greeley, Colo., and John Johnson and his wife, Marirose of Marcus.
He touched the lives of numerous people, his most cherished and memorable moments were those which he spent with his eight nieces and nephews. They are Brent, Angela and Heidi Kommes, Katie and Jessica Johnson, and Lindy, Adam and Dilan Laubenthal.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roy; an infant brother; a sister, Linda, and a niece, Ashley Johnson.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, rural Marcus. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Marcus, with the family present from 4 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.
