Charlotte A. Gernhart, 52, of Kingsley, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Charlotte Anne Gernhart was born May 21, 1952, in Kingsley, the daughter of Allen and Flora May (Perkins) Crabb. She graduated from Kingsley High School in 1970. Charlotte continued her education at Iowa State University in Ames, where she majored in Spanish and minored in English.

On June 6, 1971, Charlotte and Alan Gernhart were united in marriage at the United Methodist Church in Kingsley. Charlotte earned her degree from Iowa State University in 1973 and began teaching at Gilbert High School in Gilbert. In 1977, the couple moved to their present farm near Kingsley. Charlotte taught at Remsen St. Mary's High School in Remsen. Two years later she began teaching at Kingsley-Pierson High School. Charlotte taught her students Spanish, English II and speech.

Charlotte was a member of the United Methodist Church in Kingsley. She was also a member of Kingsley-Pierson Education Association, Iowa State Education Association, P.E.O. and the Siouxland Autism Support Group.

She enjoyed reading and gardening and took every opportunity she could to spend time with her first granddaughter, Abigail.

Charlotte will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Alan of Kingsley; two daughters, Dr. Ellie Bishop and her husband Matt of Des Moines, and Gina at home in Kingsley; a granddaughter, Abigail Bishop of Des Moines; her parents, Allen and Flora May Crabb of Kingsley; a sister, Millie Crabb and her husband Dr. Winston Crabb of Lincoln, Neb.; nieces and nephews, Wes, Laura and Will Crabb, Byron and Kerri Langland; as well and many members in Alan's family.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and a sister Mary Langland.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Kingsley-Pierson High School Auditorium in Kingsley. The Rev. Paul Evans will officiate. Burial will follow at the Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Kingsley United Methodist Church. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the school prior to the funeral on Wednesday. The Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home of Kingsley is in charge of arrangements. Honorary pallbearers will be the faculty and staff of the Kingsley-Pierson School District. Pallbearers will be Wesley Crabb, Byron Langland, Dr. Chad Fikse, Aaron Crabb, Landon Beaver and John Grabe.

A scholarship fund has been established in memory of Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to her family or the Kingsley State Bank in care of the Charlotte Gernhart Memorial Fund.
