Richard George Staab, 84, of Remsen, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, at Floyd Valley Hospital, in Le Mars.
Richard George Staab was born March 20, 1920, at rural Remsen, the son of Frank and Minnie (Strohbeen) Staab. Richard grew up on the family farm near Remsen. He received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen and was then engaged in farming with his father and also did general trucking. He served in the U.S. Army from Oct. 24, 1942, until his discharge July 3, 1943, then returned to the family farm. On May 29, 1951, he married Elaine Tentinger at Remsen. They made their home on the family farm which he operated. He also worked for Plymouth County in road maintenance. In addition he worked part-time for the Farmers Co-op Elevator and tended bar for several establishments in Remsen. They retired on the farm in 1983 and he continued to work part time for Plymouth County road maintenance and the Farmers Co-op Elevator. They moved into Remsen in November 2000.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus and Post 220 American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, bowling, woodworking and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine of Remsen; three sons and their wives, Roger and Renee of Crawford, Neb., John and Kathy of Le Mars, Philip and Diane of Remsen; three daughters, Sue Hoesing of Sioux City, Jane Staab and Mary and her husband Dave Plathe all of Remsen; nine grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Olga Stoffel of Woodville, Wis., and Thelma Brown of Gunnison, Colo.; two sisters-in-law, Rosemary Staab and Marion Staab, both of Remsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mark; and two brothers, Ralph and Mike.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson and Rev. Thomas Hart officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and a rosary by the Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus at 8 p.m., all at the funeral home.
Casketbearers will be Emily Staab, Corey Staab, Nick Hoesing, Krystal Hoesing, Kristine McDermott and Rick Plathe.
Honorary bearers will be Lindsey Staab, Drew Staab and David Plathe Jr.
