SERGEANT BLUFF -- The Gehlen Catholic softball team started out with a one-run lead and held it for four innings, but Sergeant Bluff-Luton scored four runs in the fifth and deflated the Lady Jays as they beat Gehlen 7-1 in Sergeant Bluff Monday night.
Gehlen scored one run in the first inning and held the lead until the fourth when the Warriorettes tied it 1-1. SB-L then proceeded with four runs in the fifth and two in the sixth as they gave Gehlen its fourth loss of the year.
Lady Jays' head coach Patty Hatting said errors brought them down.
"Through the fourth inning, you couldn't have asked for a better ballgame. Defensively, offensively, everything was going well," Hatting said. "Like I told the girls, they have the skills to hang in there, but their mental attitude kind of got in the way. We made a couple of errors and it was like they got down and never pulled themselves back out of it."
Gehlen had only three hits on the night. Katie Kolbeck had a double and Bre Sitzmann and Kara Krienert each had singles.
Kendra Kurth pitched five innings for Gehlen, allowing two hits and five walks while striking out three batters. Lauren Livermore pitched one inning, allowing one hit and two walks.
The Lady Jays defensively committed eight errors on the night.
Hatting said the girls got down on themselves once they started committing errors.
"Once they started with the errors, a couple of the girls got down and everybody gets down. That's the biggest downfall. They tend to beat themselves when they get in those situations," Hatting said.
Next up for Gehlen (1-4) is Hinton in Le Mars Wednesday, June 9.
