Barbara J. Powell, 54, of Le Mars, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at her home following a courageous 7-year battle with cancer.
Barbara Jo Kock was born Sept. 15, 1949, in Le Mars, the daughter of Clarence and Gladys (Steinfadt) Kock. She attended Le Mars Community Schools graduating in 1967. She continued her education at Nettleton Business College and graduated in 1968. She was employed by the University of Iowa in the physical therapy department.
On June 14, 1969, Barb and James E. Powell were united in marriage at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. After living in Iowa City and Sioux Falls, S.D., they returned to Le Mars in 1977 where Barb was a homemaker and an active community leader.
Barb was an involved member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars and the Women of the ELCA. She was also a member of National T.T.T Society, Iowa Chapter DY and the Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary. Barb served on the Plymouth County Historical Museum Board, Ice Cream Days Committee and the LCHS Athletic and Music Boosters. Barb founded and served for 11 years as president of the Le Mars Community School District Alumni Association and coordinated the Decades of Excellence All School Reunion held in 2000.
Barb will be lovingly remembered by her husband Dr. James E. Powell of Le Mars;
a daughter, Julie Hurt and her husband, Dale, of Carbondale, Colo., a son, Adam Powell and his fiancée, Wendy Pitts of Hermosa Beach, Calif., a daughter, Alyson Powell of Colorado Springs, Colo., and a son, Mike Powell at Wartburg College in Waverly; granddaughters Madeline and Danielle Hurt of Carbondale, Colo.; her parents, Clarence and Gladys Kock of Le Mars; two sisters Diane Widick and her husband, Bill, of Clear Lake, and Connie DeKoter and her husband, Dean, of Spencer; her father-in-law, Floyd Powell of Le Mars; sisters-in-law Barbara Powell of Denver, Colo., Dorothy Powell of Rockford, Ill., and Patricia Ames and her husband, Dr. Robert Frenier, of Chicago, Ill.; nieces and nephews Shane and Kristen Grego of Pleasant Hill, Trent and Tracy DeKoter of North Liberty, Kaci and Peter Brim of Altoona, Amber and BJ Schumacher of Forest Lake, Minn., and Kara DeKoter of Norwalk; great-nieces Jaeda, Payton and Lauren; and a great-nephew, Jordan.
Barb was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Bernice Powell; grandparents; and a great-nephew Ethan DeKoter.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at St. John's Lutheran Church with the family present from 4:30 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral on Wednesday. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be John Rexwinkel, Jim Rohlfsen, Gerald Ihrke, Mike Stinton, Bill Janssen and Bob Pecks. Honorary pallbearers will be Dave Heeren, Rowe Winecoff, Myron Rozell, Curt Strathman, Kent Brown and Steve Mohning.
Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Le Mars, or the Barbara Kock Powell Endowment Fund through the Le Mars Community School District Alumni Association.
