Marlene Staebell

Marlene M. Staebell, 67, of Le Mars died suddenly Thursday, May 27, 2004, at her residence.

Marlene Marie Wiltman was born July 11, 1936, in Le Mars, the daughter of Jack and Amanda (Woldt) Wiltman. Marlene attended school in Le Mars. In January 1953, Marlene was united in marriage to Varrel Virgil Popken. Varrel and Marlene lived in California while he was in the service. In 1955, they returned to Le Mars to live and later returned to California and later moved to Washington. Marlene returned to Le Mars and worked for Aalf's Manufacturing. On Jan. 29, 1972, Marlene was married to Cecil Staebell at Elk Point, S.D. Marlene had worked for Wells' Dairy from the late 1960s to 1977. Cecil died March 12, 1997.

Marlene was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church where she enjoyed belonging to the senior group and was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Auxiliary. Marlene and Cecil enjoyed camping during the summer months. She enjoyed going shopping with her children. When her grandchildren were young, she enjoyed the opportunity to help care for them and also enjoyed providing day care in her home for other children. 

Survivors include her six daughters, Crystie and Brad Smith of Huron, S.D., Linda Byrne of Le Mars, Desiree and Dennis Toel of Le Mars, Debra and Hector Mota of Sioux City, Jayne Staebell of Denver, and Melissa Staebell of Le Mars; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Darrell and Connie Wiltman of Shelton, Wash.; two sisters-in-law, Lil Langel of Le Mars and Rosemary and her husband, Joe Hilgers, of Illinois; a brother-in-law, Tom and his wife, Barb Staebell, of Morgantown, Ga.; and several nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Amanda (Woldt) Wiltman; a brother, Butch Wiltman; two sisters, MurLou Robinson and a sister in infancy, Muriel Mae Wiltman; two sons, Donald and John Staebell; and a grandson, Justin Buckley.  

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitations will be after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present to greet friends after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening followed by a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Kim Wiltman, Tim Wiltman, Kevin Wiltman, Dave Boever, Scott Boever, and Darrell Burmeister.
