Bernice I. Muecke, 83, of Sioux City, and formerly of rural Hinton, died Sunday, March 14, 2004, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

Bernice Irene Muecke was born Aug. 20, 1920, on a farm near Hinton, the daughter of Edward and Ethel (Kounkel) Johnson. Bernice's father was killed in an auto accident when she was four and her mother married Elmer Betsworth. Bernice attended several area schools prior to graduating from Central High School in Sioux City in 1938. She worked as a bookkeeper in Sioux City prior to her marriage.

On Nov. 23, 1940, Bernice and Bernard August "Ben" Muecke were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. The couple made their home on a farm east of Hinton. Ben died July 17, 1991. Bernice lived on the farm until she moved to Hinton in 1999. She had lived at Northern Hills in Sioux City for the past three and one-half years.

Bernice was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, and had been active in Ladies' Aid. She enjoyed dancing, fishing, gardening, bowling, playing cards and walking beans with her grandchildren. She and Ben spent many winters in Mission, Texas. She will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor.

Survivors include a daughter Connie Rumbaugh and her husband, John, of Omaha, Neb., a daughter Diane Zinke and her husband, Larry, of LeSueur, Minn.; a son Donald Muecke and his wife, Marylyn, of Hinton; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Muecke of Hinton; 10 grandchildren Marti (Jay) Ossman, Tracy Rumbaugh, Kevin Rumbaugh, Denise (Mike) Petersen, Stacey (Ben) Stans, Mike Zinke, Casey (Brandi) Muecke, Katie (T.R.) Vollmer, Angie Muecke and Cody Muecke; 11 great-grandchildren Dani Zinke, Devynn and Jessica Petersen, Emma, Taylor and Alex Stans, Haley Wessling, Shae and Kiley Muecke, Jonathan and Marisa Vollmer; a brother, Larry Betsworth and his wife, Sherry of Spirit Lake; a sister-in-law, Irmgard Luksan of Le Mars; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Muecke of Hinton.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father Elmer Betsworth; her husband, Ben; a son, Douglas Muecke on Aug. 20, 1992; a great-granddaughter Ashley Rumbaugh; and a brother Edward "Bud" Johnson.

Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. The Rev. David Kottlowski will officiate. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:30 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral service on Wednesday.

Pallbearers will be Kevin Rumbaugh, Mike Rumbaugh, Casey Muecke, Cody Muecke, Jay Ossman, Mike Petersen, Ben Stans and T.R. Vollmer.
