Dorothy Reuter, 90, of Le Mars, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

The former Dorothy June Luense was born June 26, 1913 at Earlville, the daughter of Charles and Ella (Holscher) Luense. She was raised in the Earlville area and graduated from Earlville High School where she was an excellent basketball player. She met Ralph Reuter while he was employed driving a gravel truck in eastern Iowa. On May 23, 1931, Dorothy and Ralph were united in marriage at Earlville.

Following their marriage the couple lived and farmed in the Earlville area for about 10 years. In 1941, they moved to the Le Mars area to a farm in Marion Township a few miles south of Oyens. They farmed south of Oyens until 1948 when they moved into Le Mars. Over the years, Dorothy was employed with Sacred Heart Hospital as a dietician and then as the head cook in the Gehlen School cafeteria. Later she was employed by Floyd Valley Hospital as head of the dietary department and had also worked as a caterer with Don Gintert. In later years, she enjoyed entertaining card clubs in a tea room in her own home. Her husband Ralph died Nov. 10, 1968. Dorothy enjoyed many moments, including numerous Gehlen ball games with her best friend and sister-in-law, Madeline Neubrand.

Mrs. Reuter was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, The Christian Mothers Society, and The Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Her family was extremely important to her and she was very proud of and dearly loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include five sons and their wives: Anthony "Tony" and Carol Reuter of Bella Vista, Ark., Ralph "Jack" and Alyce Reuter of Le Mars, Bill and Yvonne Reuter of Lakewood, Colo., Tom and Judy Reuter of Le Mars, and Stanley "Pete" and Bev Reuter of Wilton; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph; a grandson, John Reuter; and two sisters, Arlie Rieger, and Marjorie Moser.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Six grandsons will be her pallbearers: Jeff, Scott, Mark, Paul, Ray, and Michael Reuter.

Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. today (Friday) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. A combined rosary by the Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters will be at 4 p.m. and the Scriptural wake service will be at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Visitation will resume at the church for one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday morning.
