Prior to the Le Mars varsity squad's big win over Spencer for first place in the Lakes conference, the Bulldog sophomores set the tone for the night with a 59-27 stomping of the Tigers Tuesday, January 27.
Le Mars took an early 14-6 lead and held Spencer to 10 first-half points for a commanding 33-10 lead at the break. The Bulldogs continued to pour it on in the second half and came out with their sixth win of the season.
The Bulldogs' defense was outstanding in the winning effort, forcing 31 Spencer turnovers and holding the Tigers without a three-point make for the entire game, all while sending Spencer to the line just five times in the game. Le Mars, by contrast, had just 16 turnovers and was 27-33 from the free-throw line.
Jared Clement led Le Mars with 15 points and was among a handful of Bulldogs with three assists for the game. Tim Claussen was the only other Le Mars player in double figures with 13 points, adding three assists and six steals, as well as taking a charge. Zack Strub had eight points and six rebounds and Kevin Brown had seven rebounds and four points while most of the Bulldogs got into the books in one category or another. Reserves Aaron Albus, John Westhoff, Alex Popken and Joel Kruse all contributed in the win with Westhoff scoring five points and grabbing three rebounds, Kruse adding four points and two rebounds, Albus two points and two rebounds and Popken one point and one steal.
The win improves Le Mars to 6-5 on the season.
