Genevieve Kolker, 87 of Groton, S.D., and formerly of Le Mars, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Beverly Healthcare in Groton.
Genevieve Josephine Henrich was born March 12, 1916, at Wilmont, Minn., the daughter of Martin Henrich and Lucy (Wiltgen) Henrich. She grew up in the St. Killian, Minn., area and graduated from Worthington, Minn., high school in 1934. She was an accomplished pianist and accordionist. In her early years she played in a band with her sister and brother. In 1934, the family moved to Le Mars, where they farmed west of town. After a short period of working in Minneapolis, Genevieve returned to Le Mars and attended Westmar College.
She married Larry Kolker on July 18, 1938. She was employed by the Le Mars Telephone Co., Dr. Norman Mauer and Northwest Iowa Power Cooperative (NIPCO). She retired from NIPCO in 1983.
She loved to fish, dance and play the accordion and the piano. She was active in her church having taught CCD for a number of years.
Larry died in 1983. She continued to live on the farm until January 1991 when the onset of Alzheimer's disease required that she move to Groton. S.D. In February 1993, she took up residence at the Colonial Manor (now Beverly Healthcare), a long term care facility in Groton. She resided there until her death.
She was a long time member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars and attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton Catholic Church in Groton for a short period of time.
Survivors include one son, Richard (Janet) of Groton; a sister, Elizabeth Schroer of St Louis Park, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Martin Kolker (Kristy) of Coon Rapids, Minn., Audra Chmiel (Gene) of Clinton, Conn., Anthony Kolker (Laurie) of Moorhead, Minn., Christopher Kolker of Custer, S.D., James Kolker (Kristy) of Sioux Falls, S.D., Daniel Kolker of Albert Lea, Minn., and Patrick Kolker of Aberdeen, S.D.; six great-grandchildren, Matthew Kolker, Lauren Kolker, Asher Heidrich, Jaden Kolker, Thomas Kolker and Anne Kolker, and two step-grandchildren Nicholas Chmiel and Jesse Chmiel.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Lee Henrich; one son, Thomas Kolker, and a grandson, Jonathon Kolker.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges as celebrant. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Friends may call anytime after 3 p.m. Friday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home for closed casket visitation with a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Marty Kolker, Audra Kolker, Anthony Kolker, Christopher Kolker, James Kolker, Daniel Kolkern and Patrick Kolker.
The family requests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association, Groton Community Fund, NSU Foundation or Gehlen Catholic High School.
