CHEROKEE -- Edith (Van Marel) Doornink Thomas, 94, of Cherokee, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee.
The former Edith Van Marel was born April 17, 1909, in Sioux County, the daughter of Gerrit and Ida (Versteeg) Van Marel. She attended rural schools in Sioux County. On July 4, 1938, she married Joe Doornink. He preceded her in death. On Dec. 7, 1974, she married Frank Thomas.
She worked for Brentwood Good Samaritan Care Center for eight years and then served as housemother at Westmar College for 10 years.
During her life, she lived in the communities of Sioux Center, Merrill, Le Mars and finally Cherokee.
Survivors include a daughter, Maureen Peterson of Cherokee; a son, Jim Doornink of Carson City, Nev.; a step-son, John Thomas, of Orno, Maine; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; four brothers, Arie, George, Nicholas and Alfred, and a sister, Hendrina.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee, with Pastor Larry Ostercamp officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery at Sioux Center. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today (Thursday) at the funeral home.
