Ray Weinheimer, 95, of Merrill died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, in Phoenix, Ariz., following a brief illness.
Ray was born in Merrill on July 9, 1908, to Henry J. and Laura (McGillvrey) Weinheimer. He attended school in Merrill, graduating from Merrill High School. After graduating from Morningside College he worked in Sioux City at Robert's Dairy.
On Dec. 14, 1941 Ray and MaeBelle Carrier were united in marriage in Sioux City. Ray served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army during WW II in the European and North Africa Theaters. He returned to Merrill in 1948 where he lived the remainder of his life. In 1952 he earned a masters degree from the University of Iowa and was employed until his retirement as a vocational rehabilitation counselor. Laura died March 26, 1983.
Ray was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Merrill and sang in its choir. He served as Mayor of Merrill, Boy Scout Master and was a faithful supporter of the Congregate Meals program.
He will be lovingly remembered by his three children Kay VanderStoep and her husband Philip of St. Cloud, Minn.; Jac Weinheimer of Lander, Wyo.; and Ann Reinsch and her husband Dave of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Leigh, Jessica, Erin, Breann, Hailey and Kirsti; and one great-grandson Stockton.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; wife MaeBelle; a daughter Jan; three brothers, Earl, Allen and Lloyd; and a sister, Gladys.
Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at the First United Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Benjamin Meeks officiating. Burial will follow at the Hillside Cemetery in Merrill. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church and continue until service time. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
