Richard A. Leaverton, 65, of Kingsley, and formerly of Sioux City and Le Mars, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief battle with cancer.
Richard A. Leaverton was born March 31, 1938, in Sioux City, the son of Thomas O. and Ethel M. (Johnston) Leaverton. He lived in Sioux City from 1938 until moving to Le Mars in 1972. Richard served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1962. He married Bette L. Olson on June 29, 1963, in Sioux City. The couple was married for 24 years.
He remained a resident of Le Mars until moving to Kingsley in 1995. He was an avid gardener. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and woodworking.
Survivors include one daughter, Lana Leaverton and her special friend Tom Groszkrueger of Sioux City; two sons Richard Leaverton and his wife, Sue of Le Mars and Derek Leaverton of Sioux City; three brothers, Thomas Leaverton and his wife, Julie, of Le Mars, William Leaverton and his wife, Sharen, of Sioux City and Jerry Leaverton and his wife, Eleanor, of Merrill; six grandchildren, Anna Groszkrueger, Ben and Jeremy DeWit, Vincent and William R. Leaverton and Cyrus Leaverton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Betty Jepsen.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City with the Rev. Dr. Allen D. Call officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today (Monday) at the Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Ted Dreckman, Ronald Dahlman, Rick Dahlman, Bob Sherlock, Randy Olson and Archie Port, Sr.
