CEDAR FALLS -- Dr. Howard H. Marty, 73, of Cedar Falls, and formerly of Le Mars, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, a Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls.
Howard Henry Marty was born March 30, 1930, in rural LuVerne, the son of Henry Andrew and Dorothy Lena (Merkle) Marty. On Aug. 14, 1951, he was united in marriage to R. Emogene Wells.
He received his bachelor of arts degree from Westmar College in Le Mars in 1951, his B.D. degree from Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Ill., in 1954, and both his M.A. (1971) and Ed.D (1973) degrees from the University of South Dakota.
He served United Brethren churches from 1954 to 1969 and then with the United Methodist church from 1969 to 1973. He first served at the E.U.B. church in Clinton from 1954 to 1957, and then the E.U.B. church in Sharon City (Iowa City) from 1957 to 1962. He served E.U.B. churches in Marshalltown (First, then Faith), from 1962 to 1969 and then the Kingsley United Methodist Church from 1969 to 1973. He was then employed at the Plains Area Mental Health Center in Le Mars from 1973 to 1994.
Survivors include his wife, Emogene of Cedar Falls; three sons, Paul H. and his wife, Debbie, of Pryor, Okla., Bruce L. and his wife, Leslie, of Roberts, Mont., and Steven M. of Bozeman, Mont.; one daughter, Kathy A. Krieg and her husband, Jim, of Cedar Falls; five grandchildren; two sisters, Vera L. Link of Reed Spring, Mo., and Marie K. Hargrove of State College, Pa., and two brothers, Wayne G. Marty of Le Mars and Carroll D. Marty of Ames.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church in Cedar Falls with the Rev. Dick Clark officiating. Inurnment will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at LuVerne Cemetery in LuVerne. There will be no visitation. The Richardson Funeral Home in Cedar Falls is in charge of arrangements.
