Barbara Ellen Hansen, 70, of Le Mars, died Friday, July 25, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Barbara Ellen Bay was born May 21, 1933, on the family farm northeast of Akron, the daughter of Axel C. and Margaret R. (Gleason) Bay. She attended country school in Preston Township and later attended high school in Akron. Barbara was united in marriage to Curtis D. Hansen on April 5, 1952, at Fort Campbell, Ky. Barbara and Curtis farmed near Akron for 42 years before moving to Le Mars in 1994. After moving to Le Mars, Barbara became a home health care provider, assisting many families with day-to-day care of loved ones.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis Hansen, of Le Mars; a daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and Jeff Harms of Le Mars; a son and daughter-in-law, Staci and Lori Hansen of Akron; five grandchildren, Samantha and Dylan Harms, Brandon, Morgan, and Jacob Hansen; a sister, Claire Thuringer of South Sioux City, Neb.; two brothers, Jules and his wife, Darlene Bay, of Sioux City and Phillip Bay of Scottsdale, Ariz.; her father-in-law, Melvin Hansen of Akron; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Axel and Margaret Bay; four brothers, Donald, Gene, Stanley, and Paul Bay; a sister, Agnes Lamoureux; and two grandchildren, Rachel and Darin Harms.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness of St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A., Le Mars, officiating. Inurnment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery, Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today (Monday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present after 6 p.m. to greet friends followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home.
