Tim Smid of Remsen St. Mary's recently helped the Iowa Lakes American Legion baseball team qualify for the state tournament to be held in Waterloo starting Wednesday, August 7.
The Iowa Lakes American Legion baseball team came out with two victories that qualified them for the tournament.
In their first game, Iowa Lakes beat Nevada, 6-0.
Iowa Lakes allowed only two hits while registering 15 strikeouts in its Nevada victory. Tyler Sander fired six no-hit innings and struck out 11 to earn the win. Tim Smid and Matt Stevens finished up.
Aaron O'Kane led the offense with two hits, a run scored and also an RBI. The team's first run scored in the second when Ryan Norman doubled to left and came around on a passed ball and a groundout by Smid. Dustin Glade scored in the third when he walked and came around on a two out error.
Three more runs followed in the fourth inning when Smid doubled off the center field fence, Shannon Baker sacrificed him to second and he scored when O'Kane doubled. O'Kane took third on a passed ball and Nathan Wittmaack plated O'Kane on a groundout. Sander then singled and scored when Glade doubled to the left field corner.
Iowa Lakes' final run came in the fifth. Norman went to second on an outfield error, and then scored his second run on a base hit by Baker.
In their second game, Iowa Lakes pounded Bancroft, 11-2.
Pitching again led the way and Iowa Lakes pitchers yielded only four hits while striking out 10 Bancroft hitters. Joshua Wheatley got the win going the first five innings. Baker pitched the sixth and David Westergaard recorded the final nine outs.
A six-run fourth inning built upon an early 2-0 lead. Three errors - all with two outs - sandwiched around hits by Adam Berte and Norman's big double aided the big inning. Two first inning runs scored when Baker singled and scored on Westergaard's first double. Westergaard eventually scored on a passed ball.
In the seventh, Norman walked, Smid singled, Clay Moore then moved them both up with a bunt, and a single by Kyle Rehnstrom and sacrifice fly by Ben Geelan accounted for the two scores.
The final run scored in the eighth inning when Sander was hit by a pitch and crossed the plate on a double by Norman.
With the victories, Iowa Lakes improved to 13-5 overall. Iowa Lakes will start the state tournament Wednesday against Dubuque County.
