Local basketball players compete in the Pizza Ranch Defender Gold Classic

SIOUX CENTER--Five Plymouth County basketball players took the court at the Pizza Ranch Defender Gold Classic played at Dordt College on Friday night.

Karl Towns, Kyle Muecke and Stephanie Sherwood, all of Hinton, LCHS's Nate SItzmann, and Joni Harpenau of St. Mary's were all invited to play for the Lakes/War Eagle Conference All-Star teams in a matchup against selected members of the Siouxland Conference.

Harpenau and Sherwood participated in the girls' game, which saw the Lakes/War Eagle team edged out 79-77. Harpenau contributed eight points to the final point tally and Sherwood made good on one from behind the arc.

Sherwood also competed in the three-point contest held during half time of the girls' game. She sank 11 three-point shots, second only to the 2003 Miss Iowa Basketball, Deb Remmerde, who made 13. Remmerde, a Siouxland Conference representative, was the Defender Gold Classic girl's MVP, scoring a game-high 35 points.

The Siouxland Conference Boys' All-Star team also swept the Lakes/War Eagle team in the nightcap, with a 101-94 victory.

Towns scored 10 points for his team while fellow Hinton representative Muecke added six. LCHS's Sitzmann also contributed 10 points.
