I love going to games - basketball, football, volleyball, softball, you name it. I even look forward to track meets in the spring. (Actually, I look forward to spring, but track is definitely the best part of this athletic season, in my opinion.) Five local schools open spring season at WEC Indoor
(03/16/10)The 12 teams of the War Eagle Conference gathered for the annual WEC indoor meet on Monday at Dordt College in Sioux Center. Steph Rohe led the Lady Jays with a pair of first place finishes in the 55-meter hurdles (9.67 seconds) and the 200 hurdles (32.49). Rachel Tilley finished second in the shot put (33 feet, 9 inches) and Katelin Langel was second in the 55 hurdles in 9.90...
Boys State Basketball
(03/15/10) Three Northwest Iowa teams won state titles at the Iowa high school boys state tournament in Des Moines this weekend. Rock Valley (1A) and Sioux City Heelan (3A) were repeat title winners while Western Christian won its second in a three-year span. A fourth Siouxland team, Sioux City East, lost to eventual Class 4A state champion Ames in the semifinal round and finished fourth after falling to Linn-Mar in the consolation contest...
You may have heard the ongoing discussion surrounding the expansion of the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament.
(03/15/10) I've heard one proposal that expands the field to 68 - four play-in games instead of one - but the prevailing notion is that any expansion would be to 96 teams. Coaches and conference commissioners have all weighed in with mixed opinions. On one had, the current 65-team field is not a broken system, so many wonder if fixing it is necessary (if only the BCS had the same philosophy)...
