Damages incurred after landfill break-in (06/26/09)
Burglars hit the Plymouth County Landfill stealing tools and cash last week. The unknown suspects broke the doors of all four buildings including the office to gain entrance sometime between 4:30 p.m. June 12 and 6 a.m. June 15. Mark Kunkel, landfill manager, said $177 in cash and tools like cordless drills, air impact wrenches, bolt cutters and chainsaws were taken...

Sherry McGill has been selected as a regional extension education director for Iowa State University (ISU) Extension, according to Jack Payne, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach. "We are happy to announce Sherry McGill has accepted the regional extension education director position for Region 5 and will begin her duties on Aug. 1," Payne said. Hinton stayed undefeated this week by beating Spalding Catholic in Granville 6-3 thanks to a five-run fifth inning. Hinton won its previous three games this week beating South O'Brien, Akron-Westfield, and Unity Christian - all conference games. The Le Mars baseball team took advantage of a seventh-inning error as the Bulldogs defeated Emmetsburg 6-4 on the road on Thursday in Lakes Conference baseball action. In the top of the seventh with one out and the score knotted at 4-4, Aaron Fischer and Tyler Candor hit back-to-back singles. Then Tanner Dowling hit a ground ball that the Emmetsburg shortstop bobbled, allowing Fischer to score the go-ahead run. Candor later scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4...

Dixie Morton, 60, of Le Mars, died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Akron, with the Rev. Dawn Quame officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery at Akron. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Friday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars followed by a 6 p.m. prayer service.
