RSM Blue Crew supports the Hawks
By: Sydney Lewis, RSM Journalism The Remsen St. Mary's Boys Basketball team had a very successful season, extending to the state tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. Throughout the whole season, the RSM fans and Blue Crew have been loud and supportive. They were loud from the first game of the season and continued to grow in strength each game. Coincidence? We don't think so. Senior Jacob Wesselmann said, "The Blue Crew has been amazing all season long. They are the best fans in the state." The students cheered nonstop from "Jump, Nick, Jump!" at the beginning of the game until "We are Proud of You!" at the end. Although the number of kids in the student section is small, they are mighty. As senior Michael Koenck said, "[We are] the few, the proud, the Blue Crew." "Being a part of the student section is always thrilling. Ever since I was in middle school I got to be in the student section and now that I'm a senior I get the joy of leading it," senior Tom Ahlers said. At halftime, Tim Osterman, the high school science teacher, led the entire fan section in the "Oster-Coaster," a roller coaster ride followed by everyone cheering "I Believe that We Will Win!" The Oster-Coaster is a fan favorite and the Blue Crew and the adult fans looked forward to it the entire first half of the game. Video of the Oster-Coaster from the sub-state game against Boyden-Hull has been viewed over eleven thousand times on Facebook. This year at the Iowa State Boys' Basketball Tournament, Remsen St. Mary's was awarded the Sportsmanship Award. "[Winning the Sportsmanship Award] was super special because we work really hard to keep our crowd positive and cheering loud. It was nice to know that someone else could recognize the amount of school spirit we have," said senior cheerleader Catherine Russell. The RSM fans will continue to cheer on the Hawks going into the spring and summer sports, hopefully bringing them the same success.
