Burst of fall color
Jerome and Margo Hansen have mounds of mums blooming along their porch in southeast Le Mars. Small Chrysanthemums Margo purchased in pots were planted last fall. "She said, 'I'll see if they grow,'" Jerome said when the plants were put into the ground. The Hansens said the leaves stayed green all through the mild winter of 2011-2012. The Hansens gave the plants very little water until the mums started blooming in late September. The purple, rust, yellow, red and gold flowers are fragrant and attract honey bees.
