It costs $75.00 to fill up my gas tank these days. A gallon of gas now runs about $3.40. My 2001 pickup averages about 12 mpg.

How long can I afford this?

Then it crossed my mind that I drive 2 miles to work some days and 20 miles others. That's an average of 11 miles to and from each day.

Let's see, at 12 miles per gallon that means it costs me a little over six bucks a day.

I wonder what transportation costs were back in the horse and buggy days? Actually the least expensive way would be to walk. Eleven miles, at 3.5 miles an hour average pace? That's only 6 hours to get to and from work each day.

Right now I leave for work at 6AM so the walking option would require I leave at…3AM? I head home at about 6PM each night. That means I'd shuffle in about 9PM!

Obviously the walking would be hard on shoes…I think I'll stick with the pickup.

Take care
