It was a busy weekend at my little stone cottage.

On Saturday night, when my husband and I arrived home, we walked into our living room and found a chipmunk (or ground squirrel, as Iowa folk sometimes call them) running circles on our carpet like a track star.

Here's where the human-to-animal communication fallout begins.

We, humans, attempt to communicate to said chipmunk, "The door is over there."
Our message is simple: we'd like to help you outside.

Chipmunk brain interprets this as "DIE! I'M GOING TO DIE! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE! THE BRITISH ARE COMING! SOMEONE STOLE MY PEANUTS!" and runs for the kitchen.

Apparently, rodents have radar for finding the places that will be most humorous to watch humans attempt to get into.

Finally, Mr. Chip headed for the basement (between our legs) and found a tiny hole in the wall we'd never seen before.

Maybe he got outside, we said wishfully.

Next day, right before lunch with a guest, guess who decides to ramble through the kitchen again?

Finally we propped the outside door open. We think he's gone. Or he went to get all his chipmunk buddies.

Oh, did I mention that an hour after the chipmunk showed up Saturday night, we had a bat swooping around our living room?

I don't watch the nature channel, I just go home.

Might be a great time to make sure your home is ready for winter... sealing it up good will not only weatherize it but also force the guests to ring the doorbell!!!

That was pretty funny. Not in the sense of laughing at you, but to some extent, we have probably all been in a similar situation. So, I am laughing with you. The irony of it all.

Maybe Grandpa John can loan you a Boa Constrictor to help out with your little rodent problem. Of course you'd probably need to get a mongoose to help with your reptile problem. :oP

Had an incident with nature last weekend when a white Cockatoo (native to the area) flew into our lounge window and dropped onto the patio stunned and with an injured wing. My mother-in-law who thinks of herself as a modern day Dr. Doolittle went out to comfort the poor thing......big mistake, those hooked beaks aren't just for looks!!! Long after the cockatoo had gathered itself and flown away, we were still at the emergency room waiting for Mom's hand to be stitched up.

Now cockatoos have been added to the list of "Don't Approach" along with poisonous snakes, spiders and biting long neck turtles that frequent the yard.

Magdalene Landegent Yes, I like hotdish and lakes. My idea of a fancy meal is a potluck. I don't call it "cold" until it's below zero outside. I pronounce one syllable words with three syllables. (Example: "No" is "Nooo-ah-uh") I am from Minnesota. But about nine years ago, I ventured across the border to come to Northwestern College. From there I landed in friendly Hawarden where I worked two years learning this newspaper business before rolling into Le Mars to work as reporter, then editor. I learn a lot of things while I'm trying to scoop out a story, but I learn even more when I'm off the beat -- and that's what you'll get a taste of in my blog. I tend to be a klutz, I admit to starting more than one fire on my stove, and I generally find myself to be the source of many an awkward moment. Add to that newly-married life, and I sometimes feel like a three ring circus. So gentle reader, enjoy. Advice is always welcome. Even from you, Mom and Dad.
