(Photo courtesy of Sioux City Roller Dames) Melissa Ploen whips teammate Libby Claeys around the track during a Sioux City Roller Dames bout against the Big Mouth Mickies at the Long Lines Family Rec Center in Sioux City Saturday, January 17, 2009.

When I first heard about the Sioux City Roller Dames, I thought, "Sweet, I want to join!"

I mean, being on a team of tough girls on skates (I can skate) wearing skirts (I can wear skirts) and looking fierce (I could...try) -- pretty much that would elevate me to the coolest girl on the block.

Then I saw their bruises.

And heard that one of them broke another one's leg during a roller derby competition.

OK, so I just wanna LOOK tough.

These girls are serious. They skate in their off time, they have special insurance to cover skating injuries, pain is a regular part of their practice.

On second thought, maybe I'll just show up to the skating rink some Friday in a skirt and fishnets and dark eye makeup and skate real fast.

At least the 12 year olds will think I'm cool.

Magdalene, I have never been to a roller derby, but somehow I don't think it's for you. Given your diminutive stature I don't think you would strike fear in the heart of anyone at the derby except your health insurance agent. Sorry to be the one to ruin your dream job.

Mark S is right Maggs.....

And the key word here is "special insurance"

I will make some cardboard skates for you to wear over your tennies here at work and you can pretend... that might be safer... oh and you know I can do some kick-butt makeup for you, after all we want it on your face, not down the front of your fancy skatin shirt.

Are you coming to the next bout this Friday? Most people that have joined had a different thought about it until they came to watch a bout. It's not a bunch of big girls skating around trying to hurt each other. We actually have 2 "diminutive" girls from the Sioux City Journal that play. There are so many benefits to joining. One being that you will get in the best shape of your life and make friends from all over. Derby is a huge family with over 350 flat track teams in the U.S. Ask any of them and they'll all tell you how addicting it is.

Here is Hell 'raizin' Kitty's blog, check it out!

Just to reiterate how much these girls like this. The girl that broke her leg has actually been cleared to skate again and is going to be on skates at practice tonight. She is an awesome skater and you'll soon see Steel Bullit Stella back on the track again.

What would your mother think? And did you know she always watched Roller Derby on TV when she was young? Who wouldn't admire all that spunk!

's response:

Thanks mom. What were the roller derby outfits like when you watched them?

Magdalene Landegent Yes, I like hotdish and lakes. My idea of a fancy meal is a potluck. I don't call it "cold" until it's below zero outside. I pronounce one syllable words with three syllables. (Example: "No" is "Nooo-ah-uh") I am from Minnesota. But about nine years ago, I ventured across the border to come to Northwestern College. From there I landed in friendly Hawarden where I worked two years learning this newspaper business before rolling into Le Mars to work as reporter, then editor. I learn a lot of things while I'm trying to scoop out a story, but I learn even more when I'm off the beat -- and that's what you'll get a taste of in my blog. I tend to be a klutz, I admit to starting more than one fire on my stove, and I generally find myself to be the source of many an awkward moment. Add to that newly-married life, and I sometimes feel like a three ring circus. So gentle reader, enjoy. Advice is always welcome. Even from you, Mom and Dad.
