That's a BIG bookshelf

19.6 million copies in 24 hours in the U.S. and U.K. alone.
You'd need a bookshelf two times the length of the state of Iowa to fit them on.
The newest installment of the Harry Potter septology (yes, that's like a trilogy, except with seven) hit the racks with sales that made publishers drool.
It's fun to see America get excited about a new book, about reading.
And spend upwards of $250 million in the first day or so of the book's release.
This from the nation that logs more than $100 million in a weekend of box office sales with people clamoring to see the newest flick.
We love a good story.
But maybe that fervor should take us further than to the midnight lines for the first theatre tickets and the first copies of a book. Maybe we forget that we are living a good story of our own.
Where's the evil greasy-haired antagonist? What beautiful, timeless truths do we have to fight for?
It can be hardest to see the things you're closest too. But aren't we fighting for our families? Aren't we battling forces as widespread as alcoholism and world hunger? If not, then take up your arms.
And, by all means, keep reading. |
