A 10 Commandment Farewell
Posted Friday, March 19, at 10:55 AM
Today is my last day interning at the Le Mars Daily Sentinel.
I've been asked a few times what I've learned here.
Because I've from the Bible belt (aka: Sioux County), I'm taught every Sunday, Wednesday evening and the rest of the week to live by the 10 Commandments. So, I will leave you with an edited version I developed during my time working at the Sentinel.
1. Thou shalt respect other writers. Even if they are grammar Nazi's, in the end you'll learn a lot more about style and appreciate them for it.
2. Thou shalt not take the name of your editor (or publisher) in vain. Even if all your articles are covered in more blue ink than words on the paper, it means they care. They're just trying to help you be a better writer.
3. Thou shalt not kill fellow writers through critiquing their work. EVERYONE HAS OPINIONS but shouting them won't help. Even though opinions will clash, explaining your side calmly and, with a bit of humor, earns more respect and creates better relationships.
4. Thou shalt never investigate one thing: the smell in the press room refrigerator.
5. Thou shalt read a diversity of resources. Looking at other papers and reading other materials helps you discover new ways to write, new ways to think about topics and even new ideas to write about.
6. Thou shalt respond in a timely manner. A paper will always have deadlines so being on time, being organized and getting edits done early is the way to keep pace in the newsroom.
7. Thou shalt play nice. Rubber bands are never meant to hit the the person, only to scare them...but both happen occasionally.
8. Thou shalt remember that everyone can read your content. Make sure you double and triple check your facts. And make sure you separate opinion from fact.
9. Honor thy newsroom staff by bringing them food. They appreciate it and it makes for a happier newsroom. Nachos and salsa are the best.
10. Thou shalt be genuine. Be true to who you are and what you're passionate about. It will enhance your investigating and allow you to learn some pretty cool facts about a very interesting county.
Bonus commandment: Thou shalt not stop eating chocolate because you're not quitters!
Thanks for a great time. Keep up the great work Sentinel workers! And that's a wrap for me. Hasta luego!
The true college experience It is, in many ways, astonishing. Nothing truly remarkable happened: no national security alert, no police raid, no breaking headline on the news. Instead, when the curtains closed around campus, all that remained was silence. It was then that I realized movies were wrong...
Move over, cowboy! The adventures of a farm girl present: the Real Saddle It hasn't faded from its original black color but the brightness is gone. The material is loose and indented due to many sizes of riders but I am intrigued. My eyes take in these facts which prove this saddle is a more prized possession. It belongs to a beast that provides real horsepower, a power not many like me receive the privilege of controlling...
Iowa's faults...geologically speaking, of course. A 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck at 4 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10 near the towns of Gilberts and Pingree Grove, Illinois. This area is about 45 miles northwest of Chicago, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the last earthquake in that area was recorded at a magnitude of 4.2 on June 28, 2004, (about 35 miles away from Wednesday's tremor, according to the USGS), earthquakes in this area of Illinois are considered rare and can still be felt in eastern parts of Iowa...
Life is like cream cheese... My ultimate favorite salad is Oreo Fluff. Yes, I don't care what my hips say, anything with Oreos, whipped cream and cream cheese sounds to me like a good way to enjoy my dairy products. But, no matter how often I try making Oreo Fluff, I can never get the lumps out of the cream cheese...
Working hard...on Facebook This is dedicated to all those dedicated workers on Facebook, may your Farmville/ Farmtown/ Zoo, etc. be all that you wanted life to be... She had worked hard and it paid off because she now had all her ducks in a row, finally and precisely, at 11:04 p.m. in the evening central time...
My grandma, my hero Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. My grandma proved this to me. For instance, when she was given sperm, she created a baby (four of them to be exact). When she was given a house, she created a home. When she was given groceries, she created a meal. When you gave her a smile, she gave you her heart...
In memory of Grandpa I post this in loving memory of my Grandpa Nyhof, who passed away around this time last year. After having a heart transplant four years before he died, his diabetes began cutting off circulation to his fingers and toes. He lost both legs below the knees and a few fingers on each hand. But he still made sure he could get to the fridge and hold his glass of ice tea. This is what I wrote and read on behalf of the grandkids for my grandpa's funeral....
Why do we forget? "My worst fear about getting old would be that I might lose my memory," said my uncle on his 50th b-day. "Leah, could you get me some more punch?" He said this looking straight at me. His face told me he didn't even realize his mistake; Leah wasn't even at the party...
Testing Gravity The only sport I play is tripping. I play it everywhere and at anytime such as in the mall, getting out of my car, while I stand in a group or even going to work. Take yesterday morning for an example. There I was, enjoying the beauty of the crystalized trees as I strolled across First Ave, but then my view turned to slushy cement...

My name is Dori. Well, that's what everyone who has seen "Finding Nemo" likes to call me, but you can call me the new intern. I hail all the way from Sioux Center and I'm currently a senior at Northwestern College (yes, the one in Orange City), who's hoping to graduate this spring with a Journalism degree. I'm also attempting a minor in Spanish.
My thoughts jump quickly from place to place...maybe that's why I'm called Dori. You'll just have to keep up to find out.
In the meantime, just remember to "Seize the moment. Think of all those women on the 'Titanic' who waved off the dessert cart." ~Erma Bombeck
