Where The Blacktop Ends

I spent an awesome weekend at Beaver Lake, NE, visiting some very good friends of mine. We had a lot fun going out on the boat, tubing and just hanging out together after almost twelve months without seeing each other. On my way back to Le Mars, I decided to take a little detour through the Loess Hills. So I left Interstate 29 at the Missouri Valley exit, following the signs that said "Loess Hills - Scenic Road." That definitely sounded promising. First town I drove through was Logan, a nice little community right on Highway 30. I then headed westward on Highway 127 and came through a town called Magnolia. I wouldn't be surprised if that little town is home to the steepest road in the entire state of Iowa. Going up those hills, my poor car made noises that reminded me of an airplane starting. Whoever says that Iowa is flat has certainly never been to Magnolia (or the western part of Plymouth County)!!! After my car had earned mountaineer honors, I took a right on Highway 183 and headed north for the initial destination of my little detour: Preparation Canyon State Park in rural Moorhead. Finally, after a few miles on winding gravel roads, I arrived at a wooden platform that overlooked the surrounding hills. The view was absolutely gorgeous. After taking my obligatory pictures, I hit the road again and got back on Interstate 29 in Onawa. I was more than delighted that I had made that little detour. Once again, I found my belief affirmed that there is so much more to Iowa than many people think. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |
My name is Andreas Lenz and I'm from Hamburg, Germany. I was a foreign exchange student at Le Mars Community High School in 2004. I do not exactly know why but for some reason the moment my feet touched Iowa soil for the first time was life-changing for me. I instantly fell in love with the cornfields, the hog smell, and, of course, the people of Plymouth County. My yearly visit to the States is by far the most joyful time of the year for me. After graduating from the University of Hamburg next summer I hope to find a way to move to Iowa for good. Yepp, that's how much I love the Hawkeye State. I am a diehard Hawkeyes fan and I do not mind UNI. Don't ask me about Iowa State though. I get mad at people who talk badly about Iowa, especially if they've never been here before. There is a lot more to this state than people think.
With this blog I'll try to share my thoughts and observations with you. So if you're interested in a German viewpoint on Iowa related issues bear with me.
