A Perfect GetawayPosted Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at 10:22 AM
I had a chicken strip basket for lunch and Mexican food for dinner yesterday. As delicious as both meals were, my body sure didn't like the armada of calories I forced down my throat. The ridiculous amount of pop I drank probably didn't help either.
So I decided to go for a run. It turned out to be the best run I've ever had. Living on the outskirts of town, it didn't take long until it was just me, the gravel road, the setting sun and cornfields as far the eye can see. Not a soul in sight. Le Mars slowly vanished behind the rolling hills of Plymouth County. I embraced the silence around me. The sun was slowly setting down over the cornfields. I had rarely been witness to such a gorgeous and peaceful sight. Gazing at God's beautiful creation I caught myself thinking "This is everything I ever wanted. This is home. This is Iowa." My name is Andreas Lenz and I'm from Hamburg, Germany. I was a foreign exchange student at Le Mars Community High School in 2004. I do not exactly know why but for some reason the moment my feet touched Iowa soil for the first time was life-changing for me. I instantly fell in love with the cornfields, the hog smell, and, of course, the people of Plymouth County. My yearly visit to the States is by far the most joyful time of the year for me. After graduating from the University of Hamburg next summer I hope to find a way to move to Iowa for good. Yepp, that's how much I love the Hawkeye State. I am a diehard Hawkeyes fan and I do not mind UNI. Don't ask me about Iowa State though. I get mad at people who talk badly about Iowa, especially if they've never been here before. There is a lot more to this state than people think.
With this blog I'll try to share my thoughts and observations with you. So if you're interested in a German viewpoint on Iowa related issues bear with me.

Congrats and welcome Andy, I am so glad you have been brought to us.
Andreas, I can relate to your sentiments. As a temporary "import" to the area a few years back, I fell in love with the surrounds and enjoyed the seasonal changing scenery, the people and their Heartland ideals.
I enjoy my visits back to Plymouth County and whilst I have my own "home", Iowa is certainly my second home.
