I tend to get sort of sentimental on New Year's Eve. I reflect on what happened in the last twelve months and try to come to a conclusion how I would rate the year compared to the previous ones.

Looking back, I have no trouble saying that this was one of the best years of my entire life; it might even claim the top spot.

There are various reasons that lead me to this assessment.

My junior year in college proved to be full of challenges that pushed me close to the limit of my capabilities. However, I managed to master these challenges with results that I would have considered impossible just months earlier.

Although my success in school was of vast importance, my internship with the Daily Sentinel was without doubt the most significant event that made 2009 such an outstanding year for me. I had been hoping to be able to intern with a company in Iowa ever since I started college. Thus, I was exhilarated when the Sentinel offered me to intern with them for eight weeks. I am surely glad that nobody got to see my extensive happy dance when I first received the news.

The internship proved to be everything I had hoped for and more and I enjoyed each and every second of my time in Le Mars.

Alongside these most crucial events, I finally fulfilled a dream I'd been having for quite some time and visited Bavaria in southern Germany. I had never been down south before and I was amazed to see how beautiful my country is.

All in all, things just seemed to fall in place in 2009.

With a year coming to an end, it seems inevitable to wonder what the next year might bring.

I do not know if 2010 will be able to keep up with 2009. However, it will certainly be just as important.

I will graduate from college in late July. As much as I am looking forward to completing this chapter in my life, I am also worried by the uncertainty of what the following chapter is going to bring.

It is still my desire to move to the United States after graduation, preferably Iowa. I have been working towards that goal for five years now. However, the success of my plans depends on circumstances that are out of my control. Will I finally win the Green Card Lottery? Or will I get accepted into grad school? What if I neither win a Green Card nor get into grad school?

Despite this uncertainty, there is one thing I know for a fact: Sometime next year, I will cut the last corner on Highway 75 and I will see the Blue Bunny plants and the water tower. As always, I will get goose bumps and thank the Lord that I made it home again... even if only for a visit.

Six States, Seven Days, 2,100 Miles

After the end of my internship with the Sentinel three weeks ago, I rented a car in Sioux City and drove to Norman, Oklahoma to visit a friend of mine. The trip took me through Missouri, Nebraska and Kansas and I finally arrived at my friend's apartment after 11 hours of driving...

Bragging Rights and Strep Throat Fights
Posted Monday, September 14, at 5:04 PM

Ever had to swallow razorblades? Although I use Gillette's products for their intended use only, I think I got a pretty good taste of what it would feel like to force a few blades down my throat. In case you haven't already guessed it by now, I was battling a strep throat last week...

Where The Blacktop Ends
Posted Friday, August 21, at 9:26 AM

I spent an awesome weekend at Beaver Lake, NE, visiting some very good friends of mine. We had a lot fun going out on the boat, tubing and just hanging out together after almost twelve months without seeing each other. On my way back to Le Mars, I decided to take a little detour through the Loess Hills. So I left Interstate 29 at the Missouri Valley exit, following the signs that said "Loess Hills - Scenic Road."...

A Perfect Getaway
Posted Wednesday, August 12, at 10:22 AM

I had a chicken strip basket for lunch and Mexican food for dinner yesterday. As delicious as both meals were, my body sure didn't like the armada of calories I forced down my throat. The ridiculous amount of pop I drank probably didn't help either...

Welcome to Nowhere

Coming back to Plymouth County means a lot to me. Whenever I'm in the states I always find a way to visit Le Mars, even if it's only for a day or two. As weird as it sounds, I get goosebumps every time I drive into town. It's like coming home after having been gone for way too long...

Support Our Troops
Posted Wednesday, August 5, at 11:07 AM

I tried to buy a Support Our Troops ribbon for my car the other day. During my last visit in 2008, they were everywhere to be found. Thus, I was surprised to see that neither Wal-Mart, nor Hy-Vee, nor any of the local gas stations had them in stock. Even worse, I was told by a cashier that "it's become sort of a seasonal thing." I had a hard time trying to make sense of what she said and I'm still a little confused...

My name is Andreas Lenz and I'm from Hamburg, Germany. I was a foreign exchange student at Le Mars Community High School in 2004. I do not exactly know why but for some reason the moment my feet touched Iowa soil for the first time was life-changing for me. I instantly fell in love with the cornfields, the hog smell, and, of course, the people of Plymouth County. My yearly visit to the States is by far the most joyful time of the year for me. After graduating from the University of Hamburg next summer I hope to find a way to move to Iowa for good. Yepp, that's how much I love the Hawkeye State. I am a diehard Hawkeyes fan and I do not mind UNI. Don't ask me about Iowa State though. I get mad at people who talk badly about Iowa, especially if they've never been here before. There is a lot more to this state than people think. With this blog I'll try to share my thoughts and observations with you. So if you're interested in a German viewpoint on Iowa related issues bear with me.
