Something you should never say
Posted Monday, March 15, at 2:33 PM
So over my spring break I was playing a game of Mexican Train (rather fun domino game) and I wasn't doing very well.
Now I'm a very competitive person and the game ended with SEVERAL dots for me to count up and add to my score, so I was pretty downtrodden. My loving fiancee reminded me that, "It's just a game." This statement is used quite a bit and it's very true. That statement got me thinking though. Has "it's just a game" ever been that consoling? If anything, I think that offending statement has been the thorn in my ear my entire life after hockey games, baseball games, board games, pickup games, etc. Telling someone who is upset about the outcome of a contest that its just a game is like telling someone who has just been diagnosed with diabetes, "It's just a disease," (I use my own example so to not offend). It's true I have a diabetes, and diabetes is a disease, but I don't think anyone appreciates being belittled. If you care enough about something to be upset by it, its more than "just" anything. So to all out there, maybe tell your recently defeated friend to keep their head up instead. Telling them that "it's just a game" will often make you the recipient of a dirty look. I know -- I've shot a few in my time.
A Silver Lining Fists tight, eyes glued to the television, heart beating erratically, I watched team USA try to scrap back from a 2-1 deficit with the minutes draining away. Goalie pulled at the other end, the Americans ferociously cycled the puck in the offensive zone, struggling to get shots off. Then Patrick Kane (Chicago Blackhawks) took a shot...
AMERICA! ARE YOU SERIOUS?!? I owe you all a correction from my Finland-USA hockey blog earlier today. I pitted the the match as a goaltending battle between Ryan Miller and Miikka Kiprusoff. Well it would appear I was wrong, but at least I wasn't the only one. In what will go down in Olympic history, the young team USA scored SIX GOALS in the first period, with the winner going to the gold medal game...
Final Four with Finland Thanks to a two-goal effort from forward Zach Parise (New Jersey Devils), team USA reached the final four of the Olympic hockey bracket by beating Switzerland 2-0. Switzerland's Jonas Hiller (Anaheim Ducks) stood on his head, stopping an incredible 42 shots, keeping the Swiss in the game until the very end. The Americans threw the kitchen sink at them, but only managed one goal while Hiller was in net, as the second came with an empty net...
OH, Canada! What has happened to the Canadians?! Coming into the 2010 Olympics as the heavy favorite in men's hockey, Canada now finds themselves having to play their way through the playoff round, unable to secure a first-round bye. Besides a shootout victory over Switzerland (only 2 points awarded instead of 3 points for a win in regulation, Canada finds themselves in such a predicament after USA handed them a 5-3 loss last night (Sunday) in front of a stunned arena...
USA gets first win With big names like Patrick Kane (Chicago Blackhawks) and Zach Parise (New Jersey Devils) expected to do the scoring for team USA hockey, most of their offense on Feb. 16 came from their last forward line, one that rotates 4 players. Bobby Ryan (Anaheim Ducks) scored the first goal of the game with just over a minute left in the first period to give the Americans a 1-0 lead. ...
I'm passionate about USA Hockey A lot of us have seen the movie "Miracle," which very factually based on the 1980 U.S. men's Olympic hockey team run to the gold medal. Given the political climate with the Soviet Union at the time, the semifinal game when the Americans took down the Goliath Red Army team captured the entire nation...
ZAP! Registering for wedding gifts is actually very fun. Shocking coming from me, I know. If shopping is on the schedule, you can usually count me out, but this is different. It's almost like a video game. They give you a gun (ok, it's a scanner, but it's basically a gun) and let you loose in their store, scanning everything in sight...
Miracle on ice for USA in Vancouver? The United States of America was the final country to announce their men's hockey roster for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics when they did so on New Year's Day. I must say, GM Brian Burke did an excellent job. The knock against the U.S. in every international event is that the team is too old, that the Americans are dwelling on the past...
The best advice I can give Alright guys, listen up. I'm really typing to the men in the room. Now I'm only 20 years old, so I'm self-admittedly unwise in general, but this is something I've learned in life, especially during my wedding planning process. Have an opinion. Don't have one? Get one...
