Wednesday's Ride Of Silence

Posted Thursday, May 20, 2010, at 6:50 PM

It was the annual Ride Of Silence Wednesday evening. Did you notice? It was to honor the bicyclists who were injured or killed while riding their bicycle, a remembrance ride. Not sure if anyone was aware of our riding, but one thing is for sure, it was quiet. The Plymouth County Cyclist riding club are normally a talkative group (at least in the few rides I've been on so far). I have heard that other parts of the state had some really big turn out and quite the production.

I believe that the more we are aware of circumstances and incidents, the more we are able to make smarter and safer decisions. It requires us to think about our actions and responses. Sometimes it takes happening to someone close to us to respond and react. The 'hitting home' syndrome sets in and really has an impact for many people that fail to realize what can happen until after it does. Or maybe it is just disbelief, won't happen to people we know because... (add your own statement). The problem is, it does, it can, and unfortunately it probably will unless precautions are taken to prevent accidents. It isn't a matter of who is right or wrong, it is a matter of compensating, if possible, for others actions. You could be right, you could even be dead right and that doesn't correct any wrong doing.

I am really appreciative of some of the wonderful additions to LeMars that created places to do activities, taking people from more dangerous situations that otherwise would be. We have a wonderful YMCA with indoor and outdoor pool, workout facilities, gymnasium, racquetball, and available parking. Not sure if the skate park is also included in this or if it is its own, but it is a great start to allowing folks who would like to try using skates or skateboards for skill building maneuvers. The walking and bicycling trails are really great and I see many people utilizing them. They are a great asset and wonder why LeMars is not promoting them in the federal or state registries? (think "out of towners coming to use them" and help our economy). Maybe it just isn't something we want to tout? We have activities that happen from time to time downtown as well. We also have many ball parks which are being used extensively this time of year! There are many activities to do at the various parks in town. Haven't heard about the summer concert schedule yet but I'm sure it is coming for those who want to listen to the city band play. All of these have helped to make our community a safer place (yes that's right, even the concerts in the park; ever see people deprived of music and socializing?) :-)

Let's be thankful for what we have and think about how we might be able to do even better to improve the quality of life in this growing town. And let's not forget those who have been injured or lost their lives doing activities they enjoyed doing.

That's all for this time Folks! Be safe, Have Fun, and watch out for those Crazy Drivers!!!
