Celebrations

Posted Thursday, December 17, 2009, at 2:10 PM

Sometimes a person has to wonder just what it is that people are all about. I think we have all been on a side of a situation with an opinion and wondering why anyone would think the opposite! Then there are the grey times that aren't really clear enough to have a full sided opinion; a wavering or uncertain stance. It happens all the time.

Being caught off guard doesn't help matters either. The other day, I heard people talking of the reason for the season. While I am all about the celebration and festivities, I know it really has become a commercialized blending with the basis being scattered among the different backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and practices. A symbolic similarity to the American melting pot. I have heard it many times, scientifically stated, that Jesus was born in the summer/fall timeframe and it was changed to please a queen. Christmas trees are a pagan ritual. One must wonder what people mean when they say their religious rights are infringed because as a Christian, they should be allowed to have their tree up in a public location.

I wonder what people really are thinking and do they know the basis of their holidays? And why the dates were changed? Do I need to do the research again and publish it???? I will if anyone wants it.

I do hope that in all the celebrations folks are having or attending; that safety isn't overlooked. Please remember to be safe on the roads and plan ahead. Have designated drivers and phone numbers of those who can be counted on in case the designated driver changes direction at the celebration. I saw a very interesting advertisment for anti drunk driving business in Marshall MN a short time ago. There is a business to assist against impared driving. For $25 you call the business (anytime) and they will drive you home in your car or drive your car to your house (in case you take a cab). Their reasoning is that this is cheap compared to a drunk driving offense. I wondered about the logistics of such a business that only has to work at generally evening through morning hours. If there were enough demand, this could be a pretty good business.

But then I hear the drunken reasoning... Ah phoey, it's just a few blocks... And that sort of remark always makes me cringe when I hear it. Be safe this holiday season! Please?

That's all for today folks, Be safe, Have fun, and watch out for those crazy drivers!

Hello, my name is Michael Lamb. For those who don't know me I was raised here in LeMars IA, Active Duty Navy for 10 years, worked at a telecommunications firm for 10 years, now drive a semi truck for a living. Such a varied background and interests such as bicycling and photography is a basis for understanding me. Driving gives me a lot of 'think time' when not talking with family and friends or listening to satellite radio. This 'think time' is where my blog begins covering driving, politics, interesting observations, inventions, and a little bit of safety. Thanks!
